Large Underground Xenon (LUX) Dark Matter Experiment
Our experiment is a 350 kg liquid xenon time-projection chamber that aims to directly detect galactic dark matter in an underground laboratory 1 mile under the earth, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA.
I had no idea that this project existed until I was at the actual site (Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake). Our tour had to be rescheduled because they were actually installing the detector, which was a huge milestone. The physicist talking to us said that if something resembling dark matter is detected, a Nobel Prize could be involved.
